Q) Why can't I create new pages when logged in? -- DaveHarding
Q) Hi. I'm currently running a Ubuntu Edgy/XP dual boot on a HP Pavilion dv5000 laptop. I've just come through the ordeal of trying to get the internal Broadcom wlan working under Linux, and now that it does work there is only one thing left that prevents my Linux partition from being as functional as my Windows partition- namely printing. I would specifically like to be able to print over RU Wireless to the computer labs.
Here is what the faq on the RU wireless page says
Am I able to print from RUWireless with a Linux laptop?
Printing from RUWireless using a Linux laptop is not supported because the company that manufacturers our printer management software does not make a Linux driver. The company does not have any plans to release a Linux driver.
I would like to know if there is any way around this. I know that Broadcom doesn't make a Linux driver for my wireless card, but I was able to use ndiswrapper to get it working. Can a similar method be applied to this problem? Perhaps Wine? I don't know much about it, so this could be way off the mark here- but any help would be appreciated. -PatDennis
Q) Why is Anonymous editing disabled on this Wiki? --DaveHarding
A) The wiki has been starting to get spammed. Furthermore, someone removed "RUSLUG is a student-run organization dedicated to teaching students and local residents about Linux, and spread word of the "Free Software" philosophy." from the FrontPage and edited Eric's personal page. While I agree that all interested Linux users should be able to edit the wiki, this is the only "official" web presence of RUSLUG and certain pages shouldn't really be mutable by the general public. If someone vandalises the wiki it may go unnoticed for a few days at a time. I think that logging in would discourage drive by vandalism and at least make people think before they edit. All of the major OS related forums I am familiar with require a user to make an account. The MoinMoin account provides a mechanism for the user to make a personal page. The user name and the personal page is a good way for us to associate names with faces at our meetings. I can also understand that anonymous editing is a way of excercising free speech. However if it is on the RUSLUG wiki, in the current legal climate RUSLUG becomes responsible for that speech. If you disagree you can email me or we can discuss this on the list. --JohnSantel (jmsl)
A) The Ruslug Wiki has started getting an increased amount of wiki spam (links to pages selling items and such). It was suggested to disable anonymous edits to prevent the wiki from being taken over by this spam. No officer objected, so it was put in place. RUSLUG is about it's members and if anyone has other alternatives, we'll be more that happy to try them out. --EricRivas
Q) Can someone help me? I installed Ubuntu and I want access to my Win XP files... I edited my /etc/fstab file to include my partitions and I created my mount points /media/windows but I can't see any of my files... I have an external hard drive, also ntfs, and ubuntu recognizes it and i can see all my files... what am I doing wrong with my internal ntfs drives? Here's what I added to fstab:
/dev/hdb1 /media/windows ntfs unmask=0222 0 0
A) There is a typo in the /etc/fstab line you pasted: "unmask" should be "umask". Also, I suggest you remove the leading zero ("0") from the umask. After you've made the corrections, type: sudo mount -v /media/windows -- if that doesn't work, please paste whatever output comes after the mount command here. --DaveHarding
Q) Ever since installing Fedora Core 4, whenever I ssh into another computer I cannot open a new xterm window in the background. Commands like "xterm &" and "xemacs &" work fine when I am on my machine, but once I connect to a remote machine, the window will not open. "xterm &" returns the following message "xterm Xt error: Can't open display:", and if I open an xemacs window the job just gets suspended. I don't know much about X, so if someone could provide some help on how to fix this, I would appreciate it.
A) When connecting with ssh, try using the -X flag. From man ssh
-X Enables X11 forwarding. This can also be specified on a per-host
basis in a configuration file.
Q) I've been using Vector Linux for about a year, but I want to give SuSe 10.0 a try. Unfortunately I'm on campus, and downloading the 3+ gigs would kill my bandwidth cap. Is there any way that RUSLUG can help me to obtain SuSe?
A) Maybe. Could you provide us a link to the download page for the ISOs you're interested in? --DaveHarding
Q) How do I ask a question? A) Use the "edit" feature supplied by the Wiki.
Q) Has anyone configured Ubuntu on RUWireless ? I am running Breezy (5.10); following the guidelines in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WirelessTroubleshootingGuide, it seems that although I do connect to the router, I am not assigned an IP. The output of running iwconfig and ifconfig on my wireless adaptor are:
$ iwconfig eth1 eth1 IEEE 802.11b ESSID:"RUWireless" Mode:Managed Frequency:2.437 GHz Access Point: 00:02:6F:34:E2:E1 Bit Rate=11 Mb/s Tx-Power=20 dBm Retry limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off Power Management:off Link Quality:98 Signal level:0 Noise level:179 Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0 Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0 $ ifconfig eth1 eth1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:13:CE:80:47:E3 inet6 addr: fe80::213:ceff:fe80:47e3/64 Scope:Link UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:1 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:15816 (15.4 KiB) Interrupt:11 Base address:0xc000 Memory:b800b000-b800bfffRunning dhclient didn't resolve the problem. Any help would be appreciated
A) What is going on here is that the signal is too weak to grab any information. I suggest try to move around and try dhclient again. Hopefully then you will successfully connect.
Q) Does Rutgers have a package repository? What are some ways that RUSlug members avoid going over their resnet download cap, or is this not generally a problem since most software packages are small? A) We do not currently have a repository, but are interested in getting one started. You're correct that normal updates are nowhere near large enough to disrupts downloads, but we'd like them to cost dorm-dwellers nothing towards their limits. That's why we have a few Distributions available for download.

U) Check out Open Systems Solutions at http://oss.rutgers.edu for the latest news and a link to the repository at rpm.rutgers.edu. Currently somewhat limited in its offerings.

Q) Why do you support Ubuntu? A) Historically speaking, RUSLUG is a Debian GNU/Linux outfit. Today, we've got members running several free operating systems(OSes)—from Gentoo to FreeBSD—and our server uses Debian GNU/Linux 3.1, which is both secure and easy to maintain. We chose Ubuntu because it is based on Debian GNU/Linux and easy to use. The Debian GNU/Linux base makes it easy to maintain and the ease of use makes it available to a wide array of users—including those lacking technical skills. RUSLUG is commited to bringing free software to the masses.dfpWeb DesignBahamut

Actually, Rutgers does run a Red Hat package proxy at http://rhnproxy.rutgers.edu/ however this requires registration (provided for students and faculty and staff).

Q) What is the correct punctuation of RUSLUG's name? Rutgers University Students' Linux User's Group? Rutgers University Student's Linux Users' Group? Or what? -- DaveHarding A) The official full name is Rutgers University Student Linux Users' Group, and within the school, we often omit the "Rutgers University" part. My one-time suggestion of "User's" being the proper usage, was not widely accepted, and though I believe there may be a certain level of syntactic incongruity in the current name, nobody really seems to care. We just like to think of ourselves as 'RUSLUG'.

Q) At a club event, I got a copy of Knoppix 3.6 which I've been using for some time, booting from the CD drive. The CD is damaged and I'd like to get another. Any suggestions? Jim harmonicfunction@hotmail.com A) Sure! We hand out Ubuntu CDs at general meetings. We'll also be handing them out at the Involvement Fair on Wednesday 1/25. If you're really into Knoppix and can't burn your own, try posting on the "ruslug-list] mailing list- someone is likely to have one for you.

Q) I'm an employer and I'd like to hire one of your very talented members. What do I do? A) Post a message on the JobBoard .
